Endorphins Explained: How Happy Hormones Support Wellbeing

Endorphins are neurotransmitters, meaning they help the brain and body communicate. They play a key role in how we respond to thoughts, emotions, movement, and physical sensations. They act as internal messengers between the nervous system and the endocrine system, helping the body adapt to physical and emotional stress.
Endorphins are released during exercise, moments of stress, physical discomfort, and pleasure. Their role is to reduce pain and elevate mood, which is why movement can feel uplifting and why we often experience clarity or relief after challenging situations. Outside of sustained cardiovascular exercise and strength training there are numerous other controlled challenges that provoke the release of endorphins and overtime make the body more adaptable. Sauna and heat exposure, as well as cold exposure, rhythmic breathing exercises or even social bonding can all be read by the body as exertion of effort, and rewarded with chemistry that makes us more capable of handling future stress.
One of the most overlooked aspects is that endorphin signalling becomes more efficient with repetition. Regular movement, heat exposure, time outdoors, and meaningful social interaction increase receptor sensitivity, which means the same habits produce a stronger sense of wellbeing over time and recovery from stress becomes faster.
Supporting brain health involves understanding and nurturing what are often called our “happy hormones.” These are sometimes referred to as DOSE:
Dopamine – motivation, reward, and drive
Oxytocin – connection, trust, and bonding
Serotonin – mood stability and emotional wellbeing
Endorphins – pain relief and emotional uplift
These hormones don’t function in isolation. Endorphins work alongside dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin, meaning that supporting one often positively influences the others.
Simple daily habits can naturally support optimal brain chemistry:
Movement and exercise encourage endorphin release
Affection, hugs, and connection promote oxytocin
Curiosity, novelty, and enjoyment stimulate dopamine
Nourishing food and balanced eating support serotonin
When we support our brain chemistry through movement, rest, connection, and intentional lifestyle choices, we build emotional resilience, clearer thinking, and a greater sense of wellbeing overtime.
Repeated behaviours shape the signalling patterns that determine our default state. With enough repetition, wellbeing shifts from something we seek to something the body knows how to maintain. The result is a nervous system that responds with more range, and from a more stable and resourceful baseline.
